How do I reinstate my unused chimney or check it’s safe to use?
A. It depends on its history. If it’s bricked up, a builder can open it up before you call us. If it’s closed off temporarily then we should be able to remove the obstruction.
Under no circumstances should you pull anything out of the throat! Falling soot can not only make a horrendous mess, it can form a colloidal mass when it meets surrounding air causing it to act like water that then flows and splashes into your house.
Your next step is to have it swept. As part of the process your sweep will cast an expert eye over the situation. And if you make him a nice cup of tea you can probably persuade him to answer any queries you may have!
I’ve been told my chimney needs to be lined but I want an independent opinion, can you help?
Yes! Lining a chimney can be expensive, not to mention disruptive, and can be completely unnecessary. A Flue Integrity Test will give you hard facts about how much your flue is leaking and whether it needs to be lined.
Do I need a Flue Integrity Test?
Owning a chimney means you will need to make important decisions. Is my chimney sound? Do I need to have it lined? What appliance should I install? Knowledge saves you a lot of time and money. An integrity test will give you the information you need to confidently answer those questions correctly and safely.
Why do I need a CCTV survey?
CCTV survey will answer a range of questions about why your chimney isn’t working properly or why it’s failed an integrity test. Without being able to see what’s going on you have to take a best guess, which can be very expensive if inaccurate.
Do I need to clean my chimney before a test?
Yes. Faults and flaws can be concealed by soot deposits, and falling dust can make a terrible mess.
What should I do before you arrive?
A. Prior to our visit you must ensure that:
- The flue hasn’t been used for at least 24 hours
- There is sufficient space for our transit van to park legally within 25 yards of your property
- The path from the entrance to the flue is clear
- There is roughly 3m2 in front of the flue opening for our engineer to work
- Items usually stored in the opening (baskets, buckets, accessories) are removed
- The engineer has good access to the flue from the opening
